Welcome Message by the Vice Chancellor

Welcome to the Appropriate Technology and Community Development Institute (ATCDI) - a vital unit of the Papua New Guinea University of Technology. It gives me immense pleasure to introduce you to our endeavours. Since its inception in 1978, ATCDI has tirelessly committed itself to the University's mission - utilising technology to enhance the quality of life for our communities, particularly those in rural areas. Through the years, our teams have developed and delivered impactful projects in water supply, electricity, and agriculture across the nation.

Our vision extends beyond our current contributions. We are exploring innovative ways to generate revenue for ATCDI, like expanding training activities, augmenting the sale of books and food products, and creating fabricated items. We're excited about the potential of our water program, which plans to undertake water drilling activities in communities upon acquiring a portable drill, in addition to our regular water project installations. Our energy program is contemplating building a biogas plant for producing cooking gas and conducting related training programs. Moreover, our food program is focused on enhancing its capacity to conduct cooking classes and offer regional food processing training for budding entrepreneurs, thereby fostering small-scale food processing businesses.

Amidst the mounting competition posed by faith and community-based organizations, we stand resolute in our commitment to excellence in our program activities. Our preparedness to embrace the digital revolution is underscored by the launch of our comprehensive resource book, "The Liklik Buk," and various other online products. These endeavors will be supported by an intuitive ATCDI website, tailored for user-friendliness.

Our overarching objective is to fortify the capacity of ATCDI and position it as the South Pacific Technology Transfer Center, forged through robust collaborations with international governments. With immense enthusiasm, I am delighted to unveil our newly minted user-friendly website, designed to be an eloquent showcase of our capabilities and the transformative work we are effecting in rural communities.

After standing strong for over 38 years, weathering political, economic, social, technological, ecological, and legal storms, ATCDI continues to navigate towards progress. Our compass is now pointing towards urban peripheries, recognising that their needs are just as significant as those in rural areas. Join us as we sail ahead, creating waves of positive change in the lives of our communities. Welcome aboard!
